I need to find out what the ventilation requirements are for a New World Merlin (017079) 6.3kw living flame gas fire.

The client thinks they purchased it from B&Q some years ago but do not have a copy of the manual.

Anyone out there with a copy that could confirm the ventilation requirements of this fire? Does it need permanent fixed ventilation or just spillage testing?

Many thanks in advance for anyone who can assist.

Regards,

Nick

Below 7 so will not need. Why you not know that ? You are GSR an't you?

Thanks for the quick reply however not all gas fires under 7kw net input fall into the "no vent" category - it is all dependant on the design measured flue flow rate and whether the fire is classified as an ILFE or a DFE. We have recently seen a number of gas fires all under 7kw that have needed a permanent vent - such as the Gazco 16" VFC Convenctor Model 8420 which needed 15cm2 min vent size. They all look perfectly normal however the manual dictates the ventilation requirements.

Anyone with a manual out there?

Hi Nick
If you PM one of the mod's on here with your GSR details you should be able to post in the correct forum (GSR) there we know you are trade & can be more open you with the info.
Welcome to the forum by the way.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

We are not GSR as we are an insulation company. It is part of all insulation companies safety checks to ensure that all fuel burning appliances within a property have the correct ventilation to allow their safe use. As part of this we are ACOPS trained to carry out basic spillage testing, which when they fail we call in a GSR engineer to carry out any necessary works (usually resulting in the capping off of the fire). The spillage test before and after the works allows us to ensure that the flue was not faulty and that it has not been filled with insulation.

As this fire is not on our identifiable list and the manufacturer has long since disappeared we are in the position of either finding a manual confirming that the fire does not need additional purpose provided ventilation or we have to base our assumption that it needs additional ventilation and fit a permanent core vent.

Only in a handful of cases have we come across fires which are under the magic 7kw and need ventilation however they do exist so we either get hold of the manual or if all else fails, fit a vent. Just in the same way that a GSR engineer will not service a fire without the correct documentation, to arrange coals etc.

Many thanks for your advice.

Just a point but just haveing only done a ACOPS course, i'm not sure if this qualifies you to do tests on gas appliences but i'm sure someone will put me right.

give him a break, he said that as an insulation co they ensure that in carrying out their work they ensure they haven't compromised any fires etc with their work. pity other companies and trades dont think of this esp conservatory builders or window companies that are happy to seal in open flued fires, boilers and range cookers that have to be "id"ed when we follow on after.

best advice, if you arent sure advice the customer call in a gsr to carry out checks, that way nice and safe.

Not often I do this for non gsr's but in your case, considering and trusting what you said, and because I'm in a good mood, I'll give you a break.

Give these guys a call, they could probably point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the advice however I have already tried them and they do not hold any more info on file.

Seems that fitting a permanent vent will be the only option.

Thanks once again to all.

Thanks for your concern but I think you may have misunderstood my posting.

As we do not carry out any works on a gas appliance, purely a spillage test there is no need for us to be GSR. There has been a specifically designed ACOPS course for the insulation industry which all insulation technicians must have undergone (and understood).

Essentially we are interested in a) is the current ventilation correct b) we must maintain the correct ventilation or fit the correct ventilation if not existing and c) that the flue has been correctly built ie. that there are no holes in it that could inadvertantly be filled with insulation.

Should any work be required, ie if in order to carry out a spillage test part of the appliance would have to be removed, then a GSR technician is required.

We have developed a large list of gas fires and their ventilation requirements, keeping hold of old manuals etc. This allows us to identify the ventilation requirements. The problem we have in this instance is that the manufacturers are long gone and we do not currently hold this manual on file.
