I have an 18mth old ecoTec plus 825 Vaillant boiler. We have had intermittent problems with the hot water supply for the last 2 days - now there is no hot water whatsoever, although the boiler is showing no error code. When you run a hot tap - there is not the little flashing tap sign on the boiler when hot water is being supplied. We have got Vaillant coming out on Tuesday, but they were implying it might not be a boiler problem? So if not, then what could it be?

scott - yes it is the same all hot taps - no hot water at all, nor shower. We haven't paid Vaillant anything as the boiler is still under warranty - only 18mths old. They did warn us if it wasn't a boiler fault we would be charged a call out fee around £100.

I would have normally, but we are disillusioned with our installer. I had a problem with the thermostat losing contact with the boiler, repeatedly - a couple of months ago, he didn't seem that interested when I phoned him up and told him the heating kept coming on randomly. Didn't offer a solution, just left me with the problem, saying he'd talk to Vaillant, which he didn't do until about 5 days later. In the meantime I'd had to contact Vaillant's technical helpline for assistance with how to resolve the issue.

Just had the Vaillant engineer in, and the problem was a small mesh circular strainer (I don't know the technical term) - the inlet for the water inside the boiler - seemed to be totally clogged with what looked like pale beige mastic or something. When wet it felt slightly sticky to the touch. The engineer said he'd started to remove this stuff - he said there was loads - then gave up and put a new one in. I would love to know what this stuff is and where it could have come from - whether this is down to the installer with whom we have fallen out of love for other reasons.
