Hi everyone,

My electric shower which broke after the heating element packed up. In an attempt to fit the new one yesterday we turned off the cold water supply and also the hot. It probably wasn't necessary to turn off the hot as the shower only feeds cold but I guess we did so "just in case". I forgot to turn the hot back on and this morning when I did remember I turned the wheel the correct way and turned the hot tap on to find that there was no water at all from any of the taps. The red wheel does rotate freely without any resistance for one rotation but then sticks solid, I am lost!

My set up is that I have a ground floor flat. The hot water tank is in the airing cupboard on the ground floor and the mains tap is directly beneath it. The tank does not supply heating and only comes on at night and is warm to touch. I have now turned it off completely just in case. Please if anyone can suggest anything to help it would be very much appreciated. Could I have damaged the water tank by turning off the water before it was due to come on? Is it likely an air block? What else could it be?

My situation is not great as now I don't have a shower or any hot water from the taps. I am so grateful to own a kettle but I need to get this sorted as quickly as possible.

Thanks for reading

Charlie

so you have a problem with the red gate valve, sounds like you have economy 7 combination cylinder, so no need to have the main water supply turned off because of the problem, replacing the red gate valve would probably be your best bet! you cold try to apply pressure to the red valve anti clocwise but risk snapping it doing so! so either have one ready to change or call a plumber !!!

thinking about it , in your case, apply pressure tho the red gate valve wheel with a pair of pump pliers, and turn anti clocwise , it might just be stiff and stuck in place because you turned it off too hard! the worst you can do is snap it, wich would result in ........... still no hot water!!

All is not lost - your red wheel operates a gate valve which is an on/off valve.

They are often subject to seizing up in two ways
1. You can do - undo the screw that secures the red wheel to the valve (it will be rounded off)
tap the thing off and behind will be a square head brass point - get a spanner or adjustable spanner and set it up very tight on the suare head and turn - a very small amount clockwise
then repeat the action anti clock wise - wd 40 helps sprayed into the valve body
2. Sometimes the gate inside the valve separates from the shaft -not a diy job get a plumber in
