Hi there,

we have an economy 7 immersion which for years has soldiered on in silence. Past couple of nights it sounds like it's kind of boiling the water with gurgling and pops! Water is not boiling and temperature is normal (about 55 degrees out of tap). Is the heater on its way out or is there some air in the system? All hot taps and shower run fine with no sign of air in the water. Any ideas gratefully recieved!

Cheers,
Roland

Its possible

Its and easy job to part drain the cylinder and check though

It seems the heater is working though as well as the thermostat

It may be just a sign its on its way out

Are you in a hard water area? the pop may be limescale cracking

Thanks Tom,

yes we are in a hard water area but fitted a softener about a month ago. Could there be some link with that?

I would say the heater or thermostat is on its way out. Water softener probably a coincidence.

Thanks guys,
I've arranged for the heater to be replaced so hopefully that will fix the problem. I'll keep you posted. The plumber who's going to fix it says he's not heard of this problem before so here's hoping.............

Cheers,
Roland

That's a good point Tom which I hadn't considered about finding a plumber through here. If switching the heater doesn't fix the problem I'll find someone local on here and certainly bear it in mind for the new kitchen we are doing soon!

Cheers,
Roland

A quick update on this. Just swapped the immersion and the old one was resting in scale at the bottom of the cylinder. We reckon this is what was causing the noise as it was popping the lime scale like pop corn! Waiting for Economy 7 to kick in but hopefully fixed. As an aside the recrently installed water softener seems to be freeing up scale in pipes etc. with bits coming out of taps and causing things like torbeck valves not to seal off. Hope it all settles soon!

Thanks, Roland
