Ok joined new employer while back. Ive only got gas and im clued up on natural gas and LPG however now im getting sent on oil jobs (i dont have oil, and employer not planning on putting me through training) i got made to SOLDER a 10mm oil pipe in the ground (i stressed that i knew you cant do this in case of fire) got told to basically 'dont back chat' lol

What other no no's are there on oil. Im totally stuck at my situation, either employer is unbelievably stupid! Or really trustworthy as its his name on the paperwork

WOW! Illegal type of fitting in an illegal position! I'd have refused to do it, environmental hazard waiting to happen!

As you know, soldered fittings aren't allowed on oil supply pipework, did you know that when using compression fittings you must use copper inserts in the pipes? I didn't until I did my training!

You may want to get some books and read up on a few of the regs if they are sending you on oil jobs, I used to do oil work in a previous company and I hadn't realised how much of it was wrong when I did training!

You need some formal training really.

There's far too much to list. Tanks is a subject in itself.

If you want one very simple tip on it, buy some decent vinyl disposable gloves!!

Thanks guys. Im going to try to go extremely slow or just try to refuse to do it next time i get 1 lol

best go and buy all the offtec manuals, cost you more than a member but they are good sources of information and does and donts and solering an underground fitting is one of the biggest donts.

Not matter what any one said, i would never do anything that i knew to be wrong, what about the customer, paying for dodgy work. Would you consider going back self employed mate?

True. I bought about 5 of the books. I didn't get the one on vapourising appliances.

I don't touch Aga's. Best left alone, as they can go BANG!!!

only if you drop the hot spot or try to relight a hot vapourising burner, then you deserve to lose your good looks!

See, 'drop the hot spot'....I've no idea what that means, so I practise what I preach and don't touch stuff I don't understand.

I'm gonna guess here: Do you mean if you drop the wick into the pool? LOL. I have no idea!!

its the large cast iron core that heats up and you pop your pans on it,

See, miles off.

The last Aga I looked at was gas fired. It wasn't working as the thermocouple was baked.

I changed it. Fired it up, and straight away smelt gas. Took me ages to find the leak on the gas valve (had two gas valves, one pilot).

Anyway, I just said to the customer get a specialist in. I was only there to service the boilers.

AGA's are so easy to work on, really basic things. I do think there popularity will (is) dropping, as even there most die hard fans apreciate the cost of running them is getting silly, the oil ones in particular, over 40l a week so best part of £25 a week to run! There must be a limit to how much people want a AGA.

they provide a warm room, clothes drying, cooking and bum warmer all for £25 a week, bargain

Scrapped two AGAs last year. Customers didn't want the fuel bills anymore.

The really crazy thing is some people run their AGA through the summer.

It's the middle of July, boiling hot, and the Aga is switched on, making the room pretty much unbearable.

Have ripped a couple out over that last couple of years also, sad thing is couldn't find another home for them other than the scrappie.

Yes all mine end up at the scrappy. They are just too outdated and too expensive to run. Tried selling one on ebay once but it was a waste of effort and too much hassle so just scrap now.

Not going to renew my vapourising OFTEC qualification next time as they are getting less and less.

Have had a couple of customers enquire about the Snugburner pressure jet conversion but I feel that for the price you are better considering a total alternative.

We fitted a Rayburn 680KCD recently which gives you both - a condensing boiler but with the traditional range cooker and were quite impressed. It is a bit fiddly to work on but not too badly so.

if you can service one of those you can deliver babies as well on the side :)

Ebay mate. There are also firms who specialise in renovatting them.

I've known two people who have bought second hand.

I'm in the south east country side, and they're so popular still!

old solid fuel conversions are being converted back to coal/wood as gas/oil prices rise, always a use for an old aga or rayburn

Can't give old oil AGAs away here. Nobody wants them now, only solid fuel ones. Worth more as scrap metal.

How funny. People still get excited about them down here.

Hateful things!!
