Hi guys

Apologies if this subject has been covered in a previous thread.

We've recently moved into a new property with an old gas boiler. The central heating and hot water are working fine, but we find that even with the thermostat turned all the way down, the boiler is still always hot. The radiators aren't on with it all the way down, so they're ok, and we always have hot water.

Could this be an immersion switch somewhere? There's a few switches on a fusebox in the flat, but I wouldn't have thought it would be there - can someone advise as to where it might be located? I think the meter is out in the hallway, but I would've thought any switches would be inside the flat.

Is there a chance it could just be badly insulated and giving off heat anyway? I'm not sure how this all works, and I'm getting worried that our first bill is going to be huge.

Thanks for your help!

EDIT: The landlord got a Corgi registered gasman in prior to our move, so we have a certificate for it all.

Hey Mike

I think you may be right. It's large and cylindrical - I assumed it was some kind of boiler... oops.

It's just always hot, even with the thermostat all the way down. Any advice?

Cheers!

dose it have lagging on it or can you see the copper. you could by a insulation jacket for it if it dosnt have any lagging already

Hi Tubby, nothing to do with insulation only stops heat loss... It sounds like your electrical immerser heater in the cylinder has been left switched on. This works independantly from the gas boiler which also heats water.. Need more info on type of sytem u have..

If you want to know if the emersion heater is switched on , follow the cable coming out of the emersion ( usually at the top of the cylinder or could in the front bottom half ) to the switched spur and see if it is switched on , if it is turn it off . If youve got no hot water in the morning then you know someone has put the emersion on because there is a problem with the hot water from the boiler , cylinder stat or two port valve.

Thanks, guys. I'll have a look around for a switch when I get home tonight - I haven't noticed one before, but I did see a couple of valves. I shall investigate this evening! After the football.

EDIT:

Right, there's a couple of pipes visible, coming out of the tank, one copper. Both have valves on them, but there's no switches that I can see, and there's no (obvious) information written on either of the valves.

Is there a chance that there's no immersion switch, or is there definitely one hidden around there somewhere?
