Just bought a house with above boiler which has a history of regular servicing (last six months ago). When I moved in gas was shut off at the meter and electrics to boiler turned off. I turned on the gas at meter and checked to see if the counter was revolving to check for obvious leaks. It wasn't. Twelve hours later it had moved one digit on the far righthand counter (1/1000 of a unit) without me using any gas (electrics to boiler still off). I turned off the gas hob at its supply pipe. Twelve hours later same problem. I took the lower cover off the boiler and turned off the supply where the pipe enters (no external lever). Twenty four hours later no movement at the meter. I noticed that the rotary switch that controls the pilot light was on the pilot light position rather than the gas-on or gas-off position. I checked it was not stuck by pushing it in, fine. Turned the knob to the off position and then turned the gas back on where it comes into the boiler. Twenty four hours later no movement at the meter. No smell of gas at any time.This is a thirty year old boiler so was wondering if there was a way to turn it off that would keep the pilot light open as the usual thermocouple fault happens when it fails and keeps the pilot off (such as electrics off then gas off?) not as I seem to have. If not, is this a known fault that I can get an idea of the replacment part cost to see if it is worth getting a gas safe engineer to fix it or better to replace the whole boiler if it is too expensive. I bought the house cheap with the expectation that many things were going to have to be fixed (most of which I can do myself though obviously not gas) but I am planning on upgrading the insulation to eco standards and therefor will be downsizing the boiler if I replace it or using the existing one infrequently (much preferable!).Is the leakage within the 4mg limit and is it safe to try to light it up?
