Old LSVs - how to adjust?

Hi guys

Hope someone can help a novice out! I just want to remove a rad so that I can have the wall behind re-skimmed. The LSV looks rather old and I have not seen one like it before. I've attached a couple of pics. One shows the valve with the cover on and the other off. To get the cover off, I had to unscrew a little plate from the top with a flat blade screwdriver. Is anyone able to just advise how I can turn the valve off so I can remove the rad?

Use a suitable tool (spanner. pliers etc) to turn the spindle clockwise until it stops. Count how many turns and factions of a turn you make.

When you have replaced the rad, open the LSV the same number of turns.

Make sure you have sufficient protection on the floor (plastic sheeting, towels etc) when you disconnect to drain and remove the radiator. The muck which comes out will stain carpets very badly.

Thanks doitmyself but the spindle on this LSV is not like others that I have seen with flat sides that you can get a spanner or pliers round. The spindle on this one is totally round so you cant grip it. Any ideas?

judging by the age of the valveand rad it might be as well to drain down get rid of some of the crap thats likely to be in the system and change valves whilst at it so you dont get same problem on other rads if you dont have trvs you could easily add them at the same time doddle as these valves are 15mm both end same as trvs

sounds like it has been rounded off!

I would swap it for a new valve to be honest

Sorted. Old valve off, system drained and new valve and new radiator going on.
