Hi

I have just had my copper water tank and old pipes and taps etc removed. I want to take them to the scrap yard to exchange for a bit of cash? My plumber says they belong to him since he took them out. I can not believe this. Is it true?

They belong to you unless you came to some agreement when you had him to do the work. You could always ask to see his waste disposal licence if he insists on taking it away.
Either way it is your property, it is usually one of the perks of the job, I let my customers have it.

If it happend the way you worded it then I'd say it is not on, the plumber should have been more open with his intensions towards the cylinder.
Thing is a few years ago most customers didn't care about the scrap but now its all over the media that scrap is worth big bucks and as soon as a cylinder is removed about 600 people dive on it and fight to weigh it in first.

The police are already raiding scrap metal merchants looking for stolen copper cable and wheelchairs and pressing for them not to deal in cash but have proper accounts instead.

I always ask first

Did he install the new cylinder and piping??
If so i would of give him the scrap as a bonus for getting on the bus with all his tools,
copper tubing, new cylinder, bender, bag of fittings and flask of tea just to come help you out.

Bet you screwed him down on the price to!
