I've been to a house which has gravity hot water, pumped central heating, and the flow and return to the cylinder are where the immersion heater should be. I know the pipes inside are not going to be 22mm but as ive never seen this setup before could any 1 share some light on if these flow and return element type coils prone to blockages as customer is saying hotwater is not as hot as normal and also less of it, thanks

Yes they probably are prone to blockages.

It's an old idea Yorkshire and a few others still make them. The Yorkshire one is called a Micravesion if you Google Yorkshire Micraversion you get a good bit of info about them.

It was to save throwing your old direct cylinder away, you could use this or another conversion unit usually a "Sidewinder". Once again made by Yorksire. Today of course I doubt Plumbers would faffe about like that and they would simply put a new cylinder in. But hey guys! When things like this came out a Plumber was probably on only about £60 a week. A cylinder probably cost about half a weeks wages then. So converting one was a cheapish option.

I'd read what Yorkshire has to say about them, before I had a go at an old one, if I was you. If I remember right after a while they became very fragile and taking one out may mean a new one.

I think remember some guys flushed them out with a hose from the main.

Also I think they where usually connected with a tee and air bleed leg on both sides.

i left this job with hot water set to constant - went back today boiler was on lockout - checked cylinder only slighty lukewarm at top of cylinder - reset the boiler and it fired up went back upstairs to feel flow and return going into the yorkshire micraversion and both flow and return were kicking out some heat after about 20 seconds or so making me beleive there is no blockage in the coil. but the limit stat on the back boiler seems to kick in after no time at all as if there is not enough cicrulation to get the heat away from the back boiler and then as heat is rising due to gravity it then kicks back in. starting to scratch my head a little with this now. its probs an easy solution but im just over looking it . any more help wld be great thanks

If we have a back boiler here would have thought the boiler thermostat is out of calabration and requires replacing to stop over heating
