..and into a sort of large pipe, possibly clay. The gap between the toilet's waste and the large soil pipe is filled in with some sort of filler that's cracked and needs replacing. What would you use?
 
is it leaking?

sand and cement would do the trick aslong as there is no movement in the pan.
 
Ok, thanks. Not leaking, no. Was hard to tell what was used before, very thin layer of something.
 
Rope yarn and sand and cement or putty first then sand and cement.
