im now 51 and recently spent 5yrs training, working self employed and learning the trade and getting my gas tickets, but my knees really hurt now and i only like repairing and servicing boilers, to much pain doing ought else. still im my own boss and thats what counts, unless the wifes in tow!

As old plumber said, at 51 you are past your prime (bodily) and the regular plumbing work or heating installs (where the money still is) will kill you. So you are left with the dross. Service and repair and the infamous CP12's. You can make a decent living from that but there are LOTS of competition. As you work in BSS you will know a lot of pipefitter guys. Speak to them and get their opinion.
If you do decide to give it a go don't listen to all the pi......(edited again) rubbish about you can make this or that big bucks. It won't happen. You will make a living if you are lucky. The trade is in a poor state.
