I have a Ferroli optimax 18 OV boiler that has been plumbed to a sealed system, should this happen ? What might happen ? Is it right ?

fitting instructions state time and time again "must be fitted to an open vent system" instructions also say must fit according to these instructions ( which it is not )

i have challenged Ferroli on this and they confirmed to our servicing engineer that it must be an OV system, the company that fitted it say its ok on a sealed system and our engineer has stuck a sticker on our boiler saying not to be used !!! We got a second opinion he to has put a sticker on it....!

without want a whole set of stickers can anyone shed any light on this as nearly a week gone by with no heat...brr

1. Was the system a sealed one before the Ferroli was fitted?
2. Did the installer recommend the Ferroli as a suitable boiler?

If so, you need something in writing from Ferroli confirming that the boiler must only be fitted to an open vented system. Show this to the installer and insist that he changes the boiler for one which is suitable for your system. If the boiler cost is higher, you should obviously pay this, but any labour charges should be at the installer's own expense as he made the mistake.

If the installer refuses to play ball, contact your local Trading Standards Dept and Gassafe Register.

There's a clue in it's name 18 OV.

From page 12 of the manual; http://www.ferroli.co.uk/brochures/OptimaxHEPLUS18ovManual.pdf

Make Up Water
This appliance is designed to work on an open vented fully pumped heating system only, (see fig 12 page
13). The make up of water must be made via a suitably sized cold feed and expansion tank installed to
the current regulations.
This appliance is not suitable for gravity type installations or primatic type cylinders only indirect ones
should be used.
The system must be fully pumped due to the complex design of the Aluminium Laminar heat exchangers
high efficiency design

It shouldn't have been fitted but it won't cause any problems and is not a danger provided the additional sealed system parts have been correctly fitted but if Ferroli insist you can't then you can't. The boiler has all the required safety devices to enable it to be connected to an external expansion vessel set up and the maximum working pressure is identical to their system boiler version.

Strange that a manu would market their boiler as a strictly open vent boiler. Most others just call them regular or heat only and can be fitted to any system.

The problem with this trade is that there are so many numb nuts at it these days and so many people (customers) desperate to jump on a claim, thinking for yourself or using what used to be called engineering judgement is becoming frowned upon and can be a costly exercise. If it is not written it can't be done or is wrong (allegedly).

1 & 2 this boiler was supplied and fitted at the same time into the we build house 2.5 years ago, it started to go wrong last week twice which is when engineer noticed issue.

We have been on to the builders, Ferroli etc all agreed it was an issue to start with but yesterday decided that this was actually ok, although the fitting will invalidate the warranty ?!? We have challenged this and been told Ferroli will e mail a letter describing this, as yet the e mail hasn't arrived.

where to go next ?

Whatever is wrong with it is not caused by it being a sealed system but will be used as their get out.
