What is causing water to come out from the overflo in the attic everytime the central heating is switched on also the hot water light on the clock comes on as well whenever I push the central heating It is a duel clock for hot water and central heating but I would have thought they should act independantly of one another

Could be a few things.

It may be as simple as the water level being to high in the expansion cistern/tank.

Check and inspect ballvalve and float okay.

Had any work done on the system recently?

Do you live in a hard water area? Could it be limescale in the system?

The lights depend a lot on how your system is wired up.

A two channel clock, works hot water independently of the central heating and usually has the option to have hot water and central heating on together, as well as separately.

You would have to know a bit more about your system to say if its working okay or not.

The thing is except the overflow going, is it working the way it always has or has something changed?

Thanks for comments Bernie2 the house is a new one and is actually my daughters who moved in about 10 months ago but this problem has been there from day one some-one told me it might be a faulty tank thermostat or the motorized valve has gone what is your views on this

Both lights will come on your clock if it has been configured for gravity system (have u got a gravity system?). I would get in the loft at your F&E tank and ask someone to turn the heating on. Bet it's pumping over. That could be down to configuration or blocked cold feed

It could be "pumping over" but you would need to look at the tank in the loft. If water is coming out the vent pipe it may be overflowing the tank.

It may be as simple as turning the heating pump speed down or as involved as finding a better position for the pump.

If you turn the pump speed down check all the rads get hot and everything is okay.

If only some rads get hot they may need balancing.

Has a gate valve been left open which should be shut? I know I will get into trouble for this but had this once. Got a coil of 15mm plastic and teed it in this stopped the water pumping over.

could be the pump is turned up too high and pumping water over the header tank, reduce the pump speed to 2 or 1
the programmer sounds if it is wired up for hot water priority (gravity) and is turning on the boiler, when heating selected, its turns on the pump usually via a room stat for the rads
