Overflow from main tank dripping

Dear all,

Whenever I go away on holiday within a day of the house being empty my overflow from my main cold tank in the loft starts dripping onto the front of the house. This will last until we get home. When I get home I'll flush the toilet and it stops. It wont happen again until we go away and the house is empty. Could somebody please let me know why this is happening and how to rectify it.

yes , you have a slowly dripping ballcock valve in your cold water cistern , the ball arm may need bending or a washer replacing or just a new one all together. Call a plumber if you dont feel confident . Look at the piston rod that shuts the valve off it can be adjusted to shut off earlier .

Sorry John but water regs state the arm should not be bent.

I would not mess around with trying to service the dripping ball valve! Just replace the whole thing (not the float if it's sound). If your plumber selects a diaphragm valve with a cranked arm and float-adjusting screw (very common), the water level can be easily adjusted with no 'arm bending'!
