Hello everyone,

Im almost at a loss as to this one so hope someone can help!

Basically Its an Ideal Imax W100 boiler that comes up with the E02 fault after around 20 minutes of running.
3 People before myself have had a look at it, two ignition electrodes and 2 control modules have been put into it without any positive outcome.

So today I took it apart and saw what looked like aluminium oxide on the heat exchanger (white powder). So I then started to think about the flue, which nobody else had looked at.

The open flue appears to be longer than the maximum 13 meters that Ideal saw is allowable, but if this was the case would this create an oxide build up in the exchanger from flue gases not being able to escape and them recirculating back through the boiler?
If so would this then interfere with the ignition detection electrode and then send the boiler into lockdown?

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts please share them, this one is a bit of a head pecker!!

will have to look at the mi,s are you sure its not oxide from combustion? presume it has a aluminium silicate heat exchanger, you have just thrown me by calling it a open flue,if its fan assisted room sealed flue distance will be a big factor

Stick an analyser on it see what readings you're getting! Could be that one of the seals has gone on the flue and/or extensions eventually causing visiation..... possibly anyhoo's!

I did an FGA first thing as I knew I probably wouldnt be able to after it went to lock down.

Funnily enough I got decent readings, was 0.003 if I remember correctly.
It not fan assisted in any way the flue, just comes off the boiler and right up through the chimney stack:

looks a heap, good luck with it ,i find if all else fails use this NEW 6LB LOG SPLITTING AXE MAUL WOOD CHOPPER SPLITTER | eBay UK or failing that this Potterton Gold 18 KW Gas System Unvented Boiler & Flue | eBay UK sorry i know this does not help you but this may be the better option ideals are far from there namesake

Couldnt agree with you more. 95% of the boilers I fix are Ideal ones. The old ones are fine, the new ones are aweful.
Their technical dont care either!

this does not help your situation though TBH,replacement boiler is on the cards,or wash your hands of it

I would love to wash my hands of it, but Im the only guy doing the servicing in this area so Im kinda stuck with it!
Might try to pass it onto small works for a new boiler, see what they say!

Hi Ryster, Sometimes it's worth while getting the manufacturers out for a joint visit if your customer is willing to pay, otherwise you can professionally 'wash' with honesty ... Let then know it's got you baffled and the manufacturers would be their best route ... There's been many a time in my past that I've done joint visits .... Mind you that was with the luxury of being with BG...
