hey guys, just wondering why the heating pipes in my house are wrapped in what looks like hessian?????

It's the traditional lagging/insulation material called hair felt and it was wrapped round the pipe and secured with copper tie wire. Good stuff that stood the test of time and doesn't take up as much space as the modern foam insulation. Problem with it though that it's a fire risk!

its a form of lagging, not very good compared to foam and burns like a pig when you catch it with your blow torch :(

Happened to me a few times. The roofing felt version was worse and many roofs with workmen using torches have caught fire because of it.

Yep, its always best to have a fire extinguisher AND a spare pair of skids when you're solding with that stuff around.

Anyone seen that new pipe wrap from Plumbfix (other places prob sell it ) Its just like foil wrap with air bubbles, and they say its equivalent to 33mm foam lagging!! Handy to wrap pipes together i guess like flow and return....

Im gonna give it a shot, foam lagging is expensive these days and bulky. I know it looks best where its gonna be seen tho!

I haven't seen it and it would be great to have a look on it. But the link you have here is dead. Can you please take a look of your link and fix it. Thanks in advance.

I think it might be this [DLMURL="http://www.homebase.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=110&storeId=10151&partNumber=115943"]Thermawrap stuff[/DLMURL] they are on about. Seems quite competitively priced and solves the issue of how to wrap pipes that are double clipped next to each other.
