Hi.

Hope someone can help me. I am a little confused- I'll try to keep it short.

I want to be able to install and maintain domestic central heating and become Gas Safe registered (issue landlord safety certificates too etc). I already have a friend who is Gas Safe registered to work alongside in order to build a portfolio of evidence.

I can already plumb in sinks/baths and have experience soldering copper pipe etc but don't have qualifications.

I just am unsure which of the two either 6129/6089 or 6132/6012 to do. The plumber I will be working with mainly does maintenance on boilers etc for letting agents but also installs bathrooms etc.

I just do not want to waste time and money etc on the wrong NVQ based on my goal of maintaining central heating systems and fitting them.

Hope all this makes sense and really appreciate any friendly advice.

Thank you Jamie

Hello Jamie,:welcome:

There are so many different course providers and varying entry requirements for both the plumbing and the gas. so its really down to what is available local to you.
you can go straight into a gas qualification, but the plumbing is an easier qualification to achieve.
My advice based on my own experience would be to do the plumbing C&G and NVQ through a college and then progress to the gas, either as a gas NVQ or as part of the level 3 plumbing.

Don't be in a rush to achieve the qualifications, one day a week at college backed up by experience will take 4 years to get there, but most would recommend that route.

Thanks for your response Simon and your welcoming. This site is so helpful with some friendly helpful people on it. I know I am in for a long journey to get qualified- like everything in life, there is no getting around hard work. As a mature student it isn't made easy- nothing worth while ever is :)

Going to take the 6129/6089 level 2 route.

Thanks again

Jamie

Hold on Jamie

First thing, how old are you, all funding stops at 21 / 25??
Second the 6129 Tech Cert & the 6089 NVQ have been replaced & are not now funded by the SummitSkills (government).

Look at the C&G 6189 Diploma (or there are others offered by others i.e. EAL & now BPEC) this is now the recognised Plumbing & heating qualification for the industry, it combines both the college side & NVQ in one. The good bit is if you follow it right through to Level 3 & are able to go down the gas route (evidence of gas on site work) you will come out (so long as you pass) being able to apply to join the Gas Safe Register i.e. you will not have to sit the ACS CCN1 !!!

If you need more info let me know.

Hi Chris.

Thank you for your reply.

I am 37 there is no funding available for me. I am aware that the 6129/6089 is being replaced by the 6189 I think the last registration for 6129 is around the end of the year. I have enrolled for the 6129 Level 2 Technical Certificate which I am doing as a block 8 week course at West London Training College. It has cost me £1500 + vat. After that is complete I will be doing the 6089 level 2 (which is £750 + vat) alongside a plumber (who is gas safe registered which prob makes no difference anyway at level 2).

The amount of training courses are an absolute minefield.

I really did not know you don't need to sit the ACS if you go down the level 3 gas route. Thanks for that- long way off at the moment though but hope to get there in the end.

I may take you up on the offer of info as I follow the course through- thanks again.

Jamie

Your right about the minefield but thats the reason, I guess, why they are changing it to the combined one so dodgy companies can't sell 6129 as all you will need to enter the plumbing industry (& in a few weeks to boot).
Still not sure of the transfer or if it possible between 6129 / 6089 L2 & 6189 L3 I would check it out.

You sound sorted so good luck, it will be a lot to take in, in 8 weeks believe you me !! (if they do it properly).

Thanks Chris. The guy who I have been dealing with at the centre has said the next course after the 6129/6089 level 2 is the 6189 level 3. I will check this with him again though- just to be sure.

I know it is going to be hard work- visited it and met one of the pupils who had finished it, he said it was intensive. I hope they do it properly. Will keep in touch if that is okay?

Thanks again Jamie

is that really the case that you do not need to sit the acs?
what is covered will be different depending what course you are on and what level of qualification you are working to.

I have recently completed an NVQ gas course that covered just gas ( and things related to gas ) for 2 years.
at the end of the course after completing 14 exams and a portfolio the last part of the process was still to do the acs for 3 days.
at the same time there were some others who were doing the level 3 plumbing and sitting their acs, they had more exams and less qualification with gas at the end of the 3 days

Hi Simon F
Yep, the new Diploma's are fully alined to the requirements of the ACS & for that matter the water reg's & un-vented (part G) so for the final year of the 6189 L3 (if you are on the gas route) you are accredited with the ACS you then start the RE-ACS routine after the fire 5 years.
