Hi everyone im new to the forum and I'm currently serving in the army, I'm out in less than 12 months and I'm currently about 1/4 of the way through a plumbing nvq from a company called trade skills. Just wondering if there's anyone on here who has heard of the course or maybe even done the course themselves? Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Realy looking forward to becoming a plumber and eventually becoming self employed. Cheers

Hi Kenny, I am not sure of the course you are on but the route to take if you are not in the industry is the City and Guilds 6035 which will give you the level 2 diploma and then when you have time to do on site work, portfolio towards the 6189 NVQ.

If you are being funded through resettlement you can probably get your level two and three diploma funded by the services and look to get the NVQ element when you leave or if you can find someone qualified now who can give some on site exposure to satisfy the portfolio requirements.

I have been down this route and its an enjoyable journey!

6035 = plumbers mate / improver
6189 = NVQ full plumbing award

Hope this helps.

You will need on-site exposure to learn the job properly under the supervision of an expert - any other way and you rely on judging your own competence which is very difficult when you are a novice.

Getting someone to take you on and give you the experience of 3-4 years which is required to learn the job is going to be difficult. As for learning plumbing being an 'enjoyable journey', others will tell you that learning plumbing can often be very painful!
