Information on the new course is now available from this link.

Some of the units required for this full qualification must come from working on site. Simulated working is not acceptable. Hence, an end to Tech Certs and college based only learning

Not being confrontational here but NVQs have always been based on workplace learning and the certificates based on in house training at the college, so nothings really changed here from what I can see. Ifyou to prove yourself to a potential employer as a fresh faced plumber youve always needed both quals. I see were your coming from re a tech cert course and then calling yourself a plumber, but no employers ever taken that one seriously have they?

your right, prob is the people who have completed a tech cert think they are, when employers dont take em too seriously they feel cheated. when i point this out im negative!!
this stops the opportunity for a tech cert, an nvq is the only thing available

Problem I see coming is, no job, no course, no students, colleges complain no money coming in ,no more courses available or revert to tech certs as they bring in the dosh!

Comments??

What are the facts about this new course and how is it achievable. Do you have to be working in the industry fulltime etc. Where do you stand if you are 1/2 way through? What is going to happen to the T4TS, OLCI etc. Isn't this taking money out of the plumbing industry as if there is only one route to get qualified everyone's situations are different. And as already mentioned is there enough trainees, apprentices to cover us in the future!

Jamie,

there have been far too many trained on the tech cert over the past 7 years, when the tc was designed they didnt realise what would happen to the industry, now we have an influx of unqualified plumbers with a C&G cert! very misleading and now it will stop.
if your already on the course it dont matter
if your a newbie then yes 4 units must come from onsite only, no way round that, 10 units from college. if you can only get the 10 units you will not get a qual

Cool thanks for the reply - be interesting to see how this plans out, but as said previously we need quality not quantity but you also need oportunities to get to a decent level. Wonder if C&G are right or if decissions are being made by higher people!!

Still see that companies are trying to push so called fast track courses - so be warned and know where you are going and what track to take - saves a lot of hassel

C&G dont design courses, only run them. summitskills design the courses and set out all criteria, C&G can only offer what they are told, same for EAL who also run plumbing courses.
People forget that C&G are only a awarding body

hey guys, good thread!!! as a potential "newbie" wat route wud u reccomend to become a qualified plumber. i was thinking of these fast trak 1's but 5k is jus to steep! I'm really motivated to do this career change but i'd like to do it properly as most plumber round my area are jus rip off and cowboys.

Then Swis the plumb, get yourself down the collage for 2 evenings a week for a year, then take some time out form work and do some on-site work, your get training and skills to do the job, at which point you will know if its for you - at about £400 cost (from what I remember a few years back) to the collage.

thats sounds good and was the route i was thinking of taking, but wot about providers such as t4ts and ppl skills?? also if i go to the college route, which maybe too long for my liking, how do i get my foot into industry for three months??? is that sumthing the college does (e.g pair me up with a experianced plumber). if i take somthing like t4ts or a fast trak am i not ready for self employment? obviously not experianced but damn hardwork and a lot of practise shud shelp me out.

wud love to know wat u experianced guys think.....cheers

i doubt a college will sort it for you, infact they prob wont enrol you unless you can get site experience and/or be employed as a plumber. private centres have the exact same restrictions with the new course so dont know what they will do, prob charge you more to go onsite like theyve started doing with the acs

hummmmmmmm, thanks fuzzy, i'm hoping to go self employed so that shud help me a little. i think most plumbers are reluctant to help newbies due to competition.

i dont think it is the competition mate, i have heard centres say that to newbies in a bid to justify the economic climate. The fact is there simply isnt enough work out there and plumbers as other trades often see working with a newbie an additional hassle, it can slow them down, they may have to watch them more or even re doo their work. Most tradesmen are just trying to make a living and are willing to help and support newbies if they have the time

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I have a few questions on this.

Firstly I was about to sign up for an OLCI course, but thanks to the reviews and opinions I read here I didn't.

I am now in the process of enrolling in college after visiting today, and don't have any problems regarding the employment. I just was wondering if the 6189 is the qualification I need, and what is the 6129?

i will be perfectly honest with ya i did a course with train for trade,, i learnt a lot and glad i did the course BUT if you are looking to get a job with a company the qualification dosent mean much in my experiance, they want an apprentice to start again train the way they want you to be. dont wanna put ya off mate just how i see it
