The problem: 23 yr old boiler. Seems to work fine, heats to temp and the boiler shuts off as it is meant to. When the boiler trys to re-ignite it fails and seems to "tick". It will re-ignite with a good whack though. Have been told possible carbon deposits on the earth electrode but would like a second opinion.

I would recommend a replacement. Very good boilers in their time, but now surely in need of replacement. Beware positive pressure case ,need to inspect case and all seals v carefully !
 
yep replace it, saw one the other day the seals completly perished, the couple did not want to chage it but it came down to cut cap and label...
