heard jeremy vine on radio today questioning what the pound in my pocket is worth. will one of you maths guys please tell me.

i have a pound in my pocket, its from my wage so ive already lost 1/3 of it in tax and ni.
so my pound is now 66p

now i go to shop and buy a tin of beer with 15% vat on it.

by my reckoning my pound is now worth 51pence

so i should actually have twice as much money as ive got??

Hi
you have lost any of your pound in you pocket to tax and NI as that was already taken from your earnings before you got the pound, the VAT is about to be taken when you buy the beer tho

Then there's petrol duties for travel to buy your beer.

And VAT on the clothes to wear to prevent you being hauled in by the police for exhibitionism.

And if you're using inherited money to fund your business that's another 40% that was taken before you got it.

Then the council tax for your home so you can enjoy it there.

And the stamp duty you paid on your house before you bought the beer.

When I think like this I think it's amazing we are able to live.

I think Jeremy Vine is a pra#t and for every pound he gets its 95p to much
I have to retune to talk sport when he is on then back for Steve Wright

But getting back to the point, if you put the pound through the complete system, the figure is really silly, apart from the beer, and then you have the tax on the can, transport
, shop profit ECT, ECT then you have to pay tax on the rubbish it becomes
Think it is around 27p and that’s generous :(
So next time you are stopped by someone on the street asking for a quid give him 30p and tell him he is lucky to get that much :D

 so if i ask my boss for a 2700 pound pay rise (in line with something) i will actually get 10000

my faith restored, many thanks
