Many thanks for your estimate following our meeting at The Witham last week.

Considering the relatively small material cost element we feel that the price seems quite high for the work involved. As I am sure you will understand our funds are very restricted as a charitable institution and I must ensure best value in order to justify any capital spend. Could I ask if you are able to offer any reduction to this estimate before I make a recommendation to the Trustees for approval. We were anticipating the cost being in the region of £400-450.

The job in a nutshell. Remove radiator on press fit pipe, cut back into a cupboard. Couple of lever valves. Come back after decorator and supply and fit 600 high x 500 wide DC rad, new valves and about 3m of pipe.
Square metre of 150mm x 150mm white tiles in two bathrooms below hand driers.
Outside tap. 3m internal pipework, through a 2 foot stone wall and 6m external pipework to tap location.

I'm in the north east.

Might be a standard sort of reply for any works over say £25. Somebody wanting to be able to stand up and say "I asked for quotes as instructed and then pressed for a reduction, however...................................".

I would say your spot on around £200 for materials and £391 for labour

might be worth emailing back you can knock a tenner off if the jobs accepted by weeks end

There in a rush, suits me as I still have 3 weeks of my 12 weeks shielding to sit out. It's a good job to do in that 3 weeks as it's an empty building. I can shield in there 😀.

My first thought was a quick f off then. Probably more about my frame of mind sitting about and over thinking things.

Second thought was a two page essay outlining overheads and ongoing costs etc.

I'm now leaning towards saying price is the price, materials are harder to get old of at the minute, take it or leave it.

Plus they charged me a tenner for 2 room temperature bottles of grolsch last year when we watched cannon and ball.

Whats wrong with their reply is “ we anticipated !!!! blah blah , are they bloody plumbers ?? , no in other words they have just plucked their price out of the air .
That would annoy the hell out of me

Probably ran it past the gardener,
Pete, how much you reckon to do this? :)

Pffftttttttttt , bin em off pal

I would reply that you understand they are a Charitable Institution and you priced the works accordingly.
Had you quoted a similar job the price would be at least 25% higher.

Don't forget to add " God Bless You "

Just got off the phone to the bloke.

He has a meeting at 11.00 to approve the works.

Told him the price is the price, I dont mess about adding money on to knock off and my golden rule is that i walk away from any job that complains about price before i start as they will be a pain when it comes to starting.

Upshot price is fine, it will be approved and i will get a 50% deposit before i start.

Thanks everybody for the input 👍

Offering a price reduction is basically admitting you were charging too much in the first place. I never reduce a fixed price quote unless the scope of work changes etc.

Well a quick update, job all done, bit of a chew but sorted.

Terms on estimate and invoice are payment immediately on completion. Billed it last week.

Email this morning. We will pay 3rd July as that's when we do an invoice run.

Emailed back, nope, you agreed in writing for the works which also includes payment terms. Late payment will incur Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act 1998 charge. Which is £40.00 plus interest.

Apparently I'm being aggressive and souring the relationship.

So payment in account by 6.00pm tonight or revised invoice with £40.00 charge plus interest and never darken my door again as you dont fall into the category of customer I like to work for.

Oh the Joy's of self employment.

Just goes to prove i should stick to my rules 👍👍
