Ive been asked to change a couple of lever valves in a neighbours house. it will be very straightforward as theres no issues turning the water off etc so i was wondering how much i should charge for doing it? Im currently doin a plumbing course with OLCI and this will be the first job i do on my own and i have no clue about what to charge etc. any help would be appreciated, cheers

Make sure you have some public liability insurance as well.

1st Rule of wisdom - NO job you expect to be straightforwards/simple/easy/a doddle will be what
you expect. Never assume - by all means go do it and when u complete it pat urself on your back

Plumbing is full of every unforeseen problem - we have been doing it collectively 10 men x 30+
years each and still get ambushed - thats why some fitters hate the job and others rise to each days challenge each and every day.

Use this SIMPLE formula;

cost of materials plus 30% markup
daily rate or hourly rate x time to complete the works
add on 5% to total to cover fuel, business expenditure.

So taking this as a working formula:
2 15mm full bore lever ball valves = £8.00 plus 30% markup = £10.40
daily rate is £200 or in this case hourly rate is £30 x 1 hour = £30
SUBTOTAL = £40.40
Plus 5% expenditure
TOTAL COST FOR JOB = £42.42

Use your own rate, material cost etc.

Before the mods come down on me for supplying pricing on the main forum, this is intended as a helpful GUIDE only!

Most useful system 3 will apply from now on

And don't forget that you need to declare any income to the tax man. You'll need to register as self employed first.

I believe he means Data protection, and I am under the impression that there is no need to registered provided the data retained is only for Accounts and Records.

Another scheme to pull down the pants of the unsuspecting tradesmen then, glad I don't know about this and am carrying out my work completely oblivious of the fact I need to pay to keep information someone has freely shared with me.

shouldnt charge anything if you have no p/l ins or legit business and are practicing in someones property.
that way, if it goes boobs up then you were only doing it as a favour!!!.

ok brilliant thanks alot for all your replies! maybe i wont charge for this first job just use it as experience and something to put into my portfolio. and if the customer wants to make a donation then who am I to argue?! :)

Don't tell them your name, and wipe your fingerprints off everything before leaving, and you should be fine!

HIya

£30 per hour definately , but as always the most simple of jobs can turn into a mission , so i would agree work on £30 per hour and £180-£200 per day , ex materials.
