I've got a job starting tomorrow, the job entails:-

upstairs circuit 7 rads
downstairs separate circuit 4 rads
separate downstairs underfloor heating circuit approx 30m2
new 300l unvented cylinder
new system boiler
copper (£500 of)
all new valves etc
all new pipework
first fix hot and cold feeds to kitchen and 3 bathrooms

materials approx cost £4500

What I want to know is how do others price such a big job do you price on your usual daily rate or do you ask for 'x' amount with it being a large complicated job. If I price it normally I'd price labour at £3300 giving a total job cost of £7800 but I'm wondering whether to say sod it its a big complicated job and I want paying well and ask for say £10k for example for the total job...am I being greedy!?!?! I'm thinking 11days work 2 men.

I price it like you, number of days x daily rate but then add a day (or two depending on size/complexity) for the things you can't see behind walls, under floors etc that will slow you down.

same as masood why risk loosing moneys i f you done it time your ££££ in the pocket if it takes you 1 or 2 extra days your still being payed.
the way i see it is if your having to run about or wait abut for stuff ect some one needs to cover costs

HOLD ON you said you a large job starting tomoz but you haven't sorted a price??
you may as well ask for a blank cheque!!!!!

I Know I can't believe I haven't been pressed for a price earlier...I'm doing the job via a building contractor who I do a lot of work for but he knows I'm fair & has just given me a start date...money doesn't seem to be an object on the job but I still don't want to rip anyone off but on the other hand how many jobs do we get on these terms!!!!!

yer but you need to cover your butt now rather then later id get my price and T's/C's in now before work starts or you have payed for anything mates are mates but people turn funny when it comes to money.
you dont need them saying after you finished it to high or your ripping me off!!!! Dont take the risk
cover your self now before your pants are palled down and you bent over.

But on the pluss side sounds like you need a hand on this job when do i start

11 day for 2 men? Charge 12 days and then 10% profit ontop of materials and labour. Don't forget ur hidden costs and risks normally 2% of profit !

Learned alot from this, I feel the same way about ripping people off but whats the point in working your arse off for nothing.. may as well sit down the pub for nothing :)

My grandfather was a plumber - and he has been dead for near on 30 years, ( if I admit my age, probably closer to 40 years )

If I can remember one piece of advice - and only one he gave other Plumbers.

You can never overprice a job - but you can certainly underprice one!!!

I never really understood what he meant until I worked for myself.

With the greatest respect Ermintrude, and I say this to someone I hold in high regard; I think you may have overlooked the business overheads in your brief detail.
After a considerable time managing & running a Plumbing business, my advice has always been count up your overheads & then double that figure, put as high a profit margin on the job as you can, without losing it of course! Judge people, judge how much they want you to do the job & how much importance they'll put on a quality job over the bottom line cost.
