Hi everyone,

I have worked on a site for 3 years now but have now decided to go self employed due to the fact i feel i could lose my job at any moment due to the state of the economy.

I was just wondering about a few things.

1. Could any of you please give me rough prices you would charge for things like fittings baths, taps, toilets, sinks, etc. I understand prices vary from job to job and depending on the specifics of each job but if you could just give me an average cost for a staright forward job that would be very helpful. Having worked on sites i have very little knowledge on current prices.

2. I mostly do 1st fit but do sometimes actually fit the baths etc but because these are new houses the tiling has yet to be done but was just wondering if there is any advice you could give to reduce damage when removing items attached to tiled walls and what do you guys normally do if tiles do get damaged?

3. Finally what is the best type of sealant to use when fixing these things to the walls. On site we use a product you cant buy in shops so was just wondering what you guys prefer to use? I have seen many different types and was confused.

Thanks, any help on any of the above would be very helpful

Graham

how much does site work 1st fix pay per week on your job?

which area do you work in?

how long is the contract period?

oh nearly forgot, would you like me to come and price up some jobs for you, or better still i may be able to do the work for you an-all...

375 a week after tax. Not bad but it not great going to work expecting to get laid off every day. Work in Nottingham.

You would do well to make £375 a week without gas tickets self employed at the minute . Good luck doing it though .

I understand that i wont earn as much but if i can get myself started whilst still in employment at least when i do get laid off i will have a base to build from.

work out what you need to earn to survive mortgage /rent,food ,transport, insurence, add it all up devide by hours you want to work.dont forget tax stamps, pension scheem you will get old!.ask people what plumbers have charged them in the past.you will get some unbelivable answers.from £25 per hour (not enough) to£170 per half hour after 6 pm.and i do personly now of companies who do charge this.

simple answer mate as people dont do that on here ,add up your materials throw a tenna on for diesil, then work out how many days ,,lets say 2 days just say £80 a day you should be sound with that add that on to you materials and ther you go,,you will get most jobs,,if your paying adds and things do £100 a day see how you get on ,if you work 8 hors a day dont rip poeple off and you will do fine bud

yes but on £80 a day will you save enough to pay your stamp ,tax, vehicle maintenance, phone, advertising, clothing, boots i wear out two pair a year steel toe caps all that kneeling.and what are you saving for old age,£80 a day might as well work for someone else let them have the stress

the man is loosing a job he wants to go self employed,,and if you count all that then he will need to earn £150 a day ,this is the real world an somtimes you carnt pay pention and you just have to get on with the work cloths you have got ,he isnt workin in an office..and van maintance who the hell puts money away every week for that ?? you would have to be regemental to do all that ! when times are hard and you just need to earn cash to put food on the table you gota just get on with it ,,,, the real world

As Elton John said in one of his songs

profit seems to be the hardest word :D

well it should not be !!

As a customer looking at getting bathroom re-done, I would not pay more than £2000 for my complete bathroom from scratch. Flooring, wall tiling, bath, shower, basin, WC, bath & basin taps. Roughly 2M x 2M. And £2000 is pushing it. One person asked £6000, if I wasen't so polite I'd tell him to bugger off. Obviously way less if I bought everything and just paying for labour.

you could quite easily at least double that figure bob
decent quality bath £380,bath taps £ 90,decent quality w/c and seat £200,basin £140,basin taps £ 70,shower mixer £ 300,shower screen £ 160,underfloor heating £100,towel rail £ 140,decent wall tiles £ 450 ,floor and tiles £200,bathroom wall unit £ 220,lighting £ 70,paint filler £ 45
then maybe shower pump, wastes, pipework, walls ,ceiling replastered, electrical bonding update, nothing above over the top, will give a nice quality bathroom for customer to enjoy, you can spend more, many do,you have over shot the £2000 on materials alone, then you add the labour
What you do have to be careful of now,is that there is alot of expensive looking cheap rubbish all over,it all looks good when fitted new but in two to three years it is falling apart, the prices above are the lower end costs of items that will last for years
