Could someone tell me (as a point learning and curiosity) - does an indirect system (copper cylinder arrangement) have a pump inside the boiler and on the flow pipework feeding the rads or just a pump on the flow pipe for the rads?

Many thanks folks

Martyn

depends on the boiler,
a system boiler has an integral pump but for a traditional boiler the pump is external
the only time you would have another pump would be a secondary return bronze pump.
if it a gravity fed hot water set up then thats another story

not to common but you might have a set up where heating and hot water have independent pumps

then there is also a possibility of coming across a mangled set up where the possibilities are endless

Thanks Simon - so to be clear some boilers don't have pumps?

only combi or system boilers have a pump built into the boiler by the manufacturer.
a traditional open vent or a heat only thats made into a sealed system will need a pump fitting externally
look at some pictures for y/s/c/w plan heating

Central Heating Design

Your system would have one pump and either two 2 port valves or one 3 port valves which would open when system calling for heat.
Each 2 port one for hot water (to cylinder) the other to central heating or 3 port open either cylinder/central heating or both.
With system boiler pump inside or outside with open system, as explained by Simon.

Thank you to both SimonF and to H20bren - much appreciated.
