There's a 'handyman' I know who's been doing some jobs that I think are out of his league. He's not insured or qualified but he's been boxing in boilers and fitting electric showers etc.
Just seen this pic on facebook and he's removed a cast iron gutter and replaced with plastic, I'm wondering if there's anything wrong with it, I don't know as I'm not gas but the plastic pipe and gutter look too close to the flue to me.
Any thoughts?

Nope, he's someone I know through a place I used to work. Nice bloke but I think he should be refusing stuff he's not qualified for.
So any thoughts on the above pic? Is this Ok?

cant tell from pic but looks like theres no issue better pic front on would help

25 mm from downpipe i think maybe corrected ,however why do you think boxing something in is out of his league ? only a guy trying to make bit of money, these things happen everyday nationwide ,b and q make millions of these type of guys if he's not doing it someone else will

Looks fine from what I can see, and you don't really need any qualifications to install a bit of guttering. Electric showers on the other hand....

From the pic the flue looks ok. It's extended past the down pipe so it shouldn't cause any issues.

Need to be careful boxing in boilers though, especially older ones and installing elec showers is wrong.

Also wrong to be doing any work without PL insurance.

So it's OK to seal any boiler in a boxed unit? I would have thought that some air flow was needed, but I'm not GSR so it's something I'd take advice on or pass to Kev if I came across it.
The reason(s) I'm not keen on him doing jobs that are out of his league are mainly safety issues and his lack of qualifications/insurance. He installed a new consumer unit and spur for the electric shower it was a 10.5kw and he has no spark qualifications, part p or PL. It's simply wrong for him to do that work.
As for the flue I just thought it looked too close to the new plastic but as stated I'm not GSR so wanted to ask your opinions. If it had turned out that he had done something wrong/dangerous I would have pointed that out to him and advised he get a GSR in to check it over.

boilers can be boxed in but it all depends if mi,s need cooling ventilation ,in regards to fitting a shower and a consumer unit you cant stop him half the sparks out there aint part anything

its impossible to stop these sort of things happening thats the issue

no qualificatiions needed to change a shower (like for like), do some boxing etc....... sadly.

any tradesman of any type must not break all regs, inc. gas, ele, fire, ventilation, structual etc........not knowing the reg is no excuse in the eyes of the law as you should research and understand what your working on. Some regs require you to prove competence before hand like gas or electrics, sadly some dont.

Fitting gutters is a plumbers job, ergo qualifications needed.

Used to be along with leadwork but few would or could do the work so it has mainy moved to roofers.
Leadwork has even been dropped from the plumbing quals.

Scumbags, probably because the trade can't be learned in a week regardless of how good the colleges or tutors are.

I made a lot of money out of sheet lead and copper, never liked cast iron gutters and downpipes but the money was good especially for caulking the pipe collars.

No wonder customers expect plumbers to work for labourers pay, they have left more than half their die :mad2:
