Questions about inhibitor

I know that inhibitor was put into my CH system some time ago, but I've no idea what make it was and whether it was enough, and whether it has a limited lifespan.

I would be grateful for anwers to these questions (just quote the number of the Q).

1. Would it be a good idea to add some more?

2. Is it OK to mix the new one with whatever the old one was?

3. Can you do any harm by adding too much?

4. Can it be added by shutting off one rad at both valves, removing the bleed valve assembly, and pouring it into the hole using a funnel and flexible pipe?

5. Should it be topped up from time to time because it has a limited lifespan (in the same way that I have to add a chemical to my water bed every 6 months to condition the inside of the vinyl).

as you do not know whats in your system why not do a hot flush of the system and refil with a good quality inhibitor? good inhibitors can last many years in a system. I normally recommend top up every 5years at time of annual service.

I wouldn't want to do this myself, lots of drops, possible airlocks, and not easy to do a hot flush single-handed.

But I could tackle just adding more as in 4 above.

just do the nail test - get a steel nail put it in a small jar of your heating water drawn off a rad valve
if it goes rusty in a fortnight u need more inhib if not ur clear simplze

4 - only if the rad has a drain valve otherwise you will be trying to pour it into a full rad. If no drain then you can crack a nut loose and drain some into a bowl
