Does the compression nut on a rad valve need to be all the way on to the rad tail? Or can it just be on just over the olives depth? Have one that the pipes are exiting the wall and are 5/10mm out

Are you sure the tails aren't longer and actually have the full slip ?

nope needs to be all the way on fully seated

Are we talking just about the rad valve tail end? If so, you could buy the longer tails that are approx 20mm longer and also they can be cut if needed.
On the rad tails the valve could be fitted just half on without any problem at all. (Some valves are actually made with just half the depth space, like Drayton for example). As long as the olive is fully past the end of the tail by 1/4 inch it will be fine if it has to be like that.
I prefer the copper pipe to be full in, but it will do if slightly less, same as above.

Yes its were the nut fastens up to the rad valve tail end had been first fixed but is 10mm out on one end. There is no play in the pipe so may have.to be a tail extension?

If the olive is going to be about 1/4" clear past the end of tail, then it will be fine, as nothing can go wrong with the olive. But if you want you could buy a Myson rad extension, which are all one piece, same as those supplied with rad valves.
I fit rad valves not fully on the tails, if the pipes are going to have very little movement, such as when they are bored through walls etc.

Thanks so as long as the start of the olive is 1/4inch past the end of the rad tail all should be well?

Yes it will not pull off or leak if olive compressed properly. The tail is solid, unlike copper pipe, so it won't deform. But buy a longer tail if you want to get it full into valve
