does anyone know the difference in efficiency/ output of new radiators relative to older ones?
I can find details on new rads but dont seem able to find details on older rads. This would be useful in explaining to customers the benefits of newer rads (and why they can sometimes be smaller than their old ones).

thanks

I think box convectors are around 30% more efficient than similar size steel panel rads. Myson, delonghi etc will confirm this, give them a call, they will be happy to tell you. Not only will the customer be using less gas to heat the rooms(less water content to heat), but also there will be less gas waste due to sludge and scale(both effect thermal efficiency. Next time you update a system, rads and all, take two gas readings in the middle of winter and compare them to the gas consumption to the year before(if figures are available, you'll be surprised

use a laser thermometer and compare heat out put to same boiler setting for old and new rad?.

a thermometer will only tell you the temperature not the amount of heat transfered to the air

efficency of a radiator is really only varied by the amount of surace area and to some degree the airfow through it at any given temp

My system is 28 years old and I recently updated a large twin panel rad to a double (with two convectors) of the same overall size. I can`t give you figures but the output difference is very VERY noticable and the room much warmer.

Yes I’d do that too, just shut the radiator...
