Discuss Rain ingress through boiler flue in the Boilers area at Plumbers Forums

Hi Guys

I have an Ideal Logic System s24 which was installed approx 2 years, and haven't had any problems with it.

This morning there was a wet patch below the boiler, and multiple drops of water under the boiling casing.

I turned offbthe power and popped the cover off just to look, and it is obvious that rainwater has been blown in through the outer duct of the flue.

We had exceptional wind and rain last night, so conditions must have been just right for it to occur. The wall is quite exposed to the weather.

This is the first time it's happened, so not the end of the world - and as I can't move the boiler to a more sheltered external wall I don't think there is much I could do about it.

I've spoken to Ideal this morning, and they said they sell a flue deflector, but this seems to be to deflect the plume upwards, so would make the problem worse, as it would just catch all the rain.

I know the rubber gasket isn't fitted to the end of the flue, the wall was rendered around the flue and it hasn't been refitted yet.

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or tips. Thanks in advance.

Need a Gas Safe mate. You shouldn’t be taking the cover off the boiler as it is an integral part of the casing.

I should have said I had a plumber out (assuming it was a leak), and he just said it was just rain due to the freak weather, and there wasn't much that could be done apart from moving the boiler which isn't feasible in my house. The rain has been blown in horizontally.

The other concern is that your picture of the flue is at risk as ideal don’t allow any white showing , as not uv protected. It’s the same as baxi. Flue needs cutting back

Has anyone got any literature on his about “white showing” ? I can’t find it in any info in the manual. I’ve got a Potterton Promax 28 he a. Thanks

Some manufacturers allow it , some dont , quickest way is to ring / email them , god help you if you have to ring baxi.

why do they think a painted metal flue cant take uv? strange one that. the rubber not sitting in the correct place stopping ingress between the plastic end and the metal i understand.
