Hi I am contemplating fitting a Gas fired Rayburn in my Kitchen, the cylinder is upstairs so i have decided to run the pipes directly to the cylinder with a towel rail to act as a heat loss but I think I read somewhere that I needed to put a circulating pump into the circuit I would have thought that gravity would have been enough as its not far and up hill all the way can anybody confirm if this is a legal requirement to install a pump. I would also like to take a hot water supply from the hot out of the Rayburn to the kitchen sink rather than running another hot back from the cylinder.
Regards Mike

I'd strongly advise you to get someone in that knows about these appliances & at the very least a RGI. From what you've said you must have limited knowledge of this type of installation.

rayburns have quite specific instructions on installation of their kit and apart from anything else you wouldnt be complying with building regs with what you intend. Have a look on the rayburn site for an engineer near you who can do the work, being as your not gas qualified from what you have said, you arent allowed to touch a rayburn install anyhow.

Hi thanks for your reply, I have no intentions of installing the Rayburn but need what is possible before ordering the stove, my house is not suitable to run radiators of it but I would like to heat domestic hot water, if what I suggested is not legal I need to know in what way. If it becomes too complicated I will simply order a model that has no boiler in it.

Ok simple question is it allowed to heat a cylinder with a direct system rather than through an indirect coil etc. if not I will most likely just buy the cooker as i really dont want to go to the upheaval of a new cylinder etc. ?

As long as the heat exchanger is suitable, i. e non ferous and approved for that use by the manufacturer

Just reread this, and am trying hard to understand if your purchasing a new rayburn why youd need a heat sink, how on earth you can tap directly into the heating primaries for a sink supply saftely and why you would consider a gravity feed against the buildings regs rules in todays egergy saving climate. just take the advice offered and get someone in who understands what is what. Why spend upwards of £5-£7 k and then botch it in

Not a good route to have direct DHW from a Rayburn. Should be indirect. Speak with AGA/Rayburn for an approved installer. After all your spending a great deal of cash on one of these, so you don't want to mess it up.

I am trying to find out what I do need I have already said I have no intention of installing it my self but if its going to cost several thousands to heat domestic water then I will simply install a cooker, that will heat the room it's in and can also be used to cook.
firstly what is the problem with taking hot water from the hot pipe from the Rayburn to the cylinder that is be a direct system so the hole system will be vented through the cylinder hot take off at the top. The only reason I mentioned the heat sink towel rail was because Rayburn suggest it in one of their books.
If I can see a way to do the job easily then I will get a plumber in to install it or me. My house is very old walls are dry stone and very thick.
I only asked for ideas rather than a lecture on using a Gas safe plumber.
regards Mike.

Your gas safe plumber in conjunction with the manufacturer will be able to answer all your questions. So the sooner you speak to one face to face the quicker you will have your answers.

A modern rayburn wont lose heat to your kitchen like the older ones did, youll need a radiator.
where on earth did you pull several thousand out of the air as a figure for installing a new cylinder suitable for your rayburn?
If your buying a new rayburn why on earth dont you pick one that does central heat, hot water and cooking to save money on using another boiler?
if you try installing it yourself, no sensible plumber will commission it for you!
If you knew what you were about you'd realise that a modern gas rayburn doesnt need a heat sink if the hw system is installed correctly iaw manufacturers instructions.
