Hello

Only a couple of days ago, my downstairs toilet stopped flushing properly. You now have to pump the handle 6 or 7 time in quick succession to get enough water in to clear the waster. The "feel" of the handle has a lot less resistance than it should have as well, like it would if there was no water in the tank, but the tank is filling up fine. I'm assuming that there is a washer or something that isn't making a seal. Would I be on the right track? Is this something I can replace or it is going to require new cistern innards?

thanks

Dave

yes there is a biggish diaphragm washer in the bottom of the syphon

best off changing the whole syphon to a dudley theres are easy to maintain and make sure you get the same size!

It's a new siphon you need.

Sometimes this is a quick and easy job.

Other times you begin to wonder if it's worth replacing the loo completely because trying to get the old one out is a real hassle. Close coupled loos are the worst because the nuts underneath are usually nicely rusted with all sorts of 'orrible gunk.

If it's a low level (or high level) cistern it's not too bad a job.

Some plumbers (myself included) have been known to just replace the diaphragm in the bottom of the syphon, I've even cut out a "new" diaphragm from a heavy duty black rubble sack and fitted it one evening, (as a temporary repair) customer fully informed of course, I told her when it goes again (as it shouldn't really last long) give me a call and I'll replace the syphon entirely. Its been there for nearly 2 years and is still working fine!!

listen mate the plastic membrane in the syphon box has split.
turn off water supply to cistern.
drain water from cistern, flush most out ,scoop out rest if u want to keep dry.
there will be wing nuts either side at back of bowl.open them . lift off cistern from bowl.[there is generally 2 screws high on inside of cistern attaching it to wall, unscrew!]
when u have cistern off u will see a large nut on the underside. open this.
the syphon will come loose from base of cistern.there is a hooked rod attaching to flush handle disconnect[take your time and watch what u are doing baring in mind its to go back the same way.]the hooked rod coming from the flush handle is attached to a plastic piece coming out of the syphon box..once this is disconnected u will see the problem before your eyes .hey presto...
the membrane will be split.replace it with a similar type of plastic piece.small scissors and a little cop on can turn many household items into a membrane for a siphon box.
repaired the one in my own loo at home the other day, used a orange juice carton.this is a very simple thing to do .. a little project for u .
clean the hole in the bottom of the cistern ,some times there may be silicone on it .resealing it will be grand.job will only cost u your time.
if u refer to this as u are doing it and take your time,it will be grand.

cheers for the help guys! That'll give me something to do on Saturday morning! I'll report back!

Dave
