Recommendations on hot water system

Hi guys,

I have just bought a nice little bungalow by the sea, which is a little dated in terms of plumbing. No gas supply into the property at all so currently all runs off electric. CWST in the loft and cylinder in the airing cupboard in a bedroom below. If we want hot water its all off the immersion. The cylinder looks ancient so I am planning on replacing it anyway as its bound to be scaled up.

I'm assuming running a gas main into the property is going to cost a small fortune, therefore looking at options without any gas supply. I was thinking maybe an unvented cylinder relocated up into the loft but wondered what people thought? What will be the most economical system?

Unvented cylinders , superb . Its how you heat it thats the prob as Shawn above has suggested theres plenty to go at, first thing I would do is go down the gas route, find out the actual cost, it seems to vary all over the country

It depends if there's gas in the street. If not I would pay serious consideration to oil with solar unvented.

I agree with JCS, at the minute oil is relatively cheap but will go back up so if you can use the solar Thermal into a heat store then that's probably best.

Solar thermal is a good supplement to any heating of dhw

I've fitted a few electric boilers recently up in lofts right next to the Unvented cylinder. Not sure of the power consumption though. Just told to fit it. Works well though.

Best Possible solution: insulate the building to 2015 building regs and run it all of an air source heat pump (ASHP) (make sure it's suitable for a coastal environment), replace the DHW with an unvented one if you've got enough pressure and flow, and heat it from the ASHP. The govt will even pay you a chunk towards it with the Domestic RHI.
