Redundancy

Hi all,

I'm a Plasterer in Cardiff whose recently been made redundant. I've heard that I might be eligible for some funding towards training? I'm interested in retraining as a Painter and Decorator as I think I might be able to get some further work in this area.

Has anyone here been made redundant?? If so, have you managed to access any funding?? Or did you go straight into another job??

Contact your local Business Link. They will give you advice on traning and setting up, and advise you what funding is available. You can work for yourself as plasterer whilst doing your painting and decorating training. Start up your business as sole trader first and you can offset your training costs and materials purchase against tax.

Working for yourself means that you are in control of your own work. You can always work contract if you have a large enough one your way and still maintain your business.

I would also suggest getting some rudimentary training in basic joinery so you can box in pipework, replace skirtings, fit architraves etc in addition to your plastering and decorating work. Then you can be an all-rounder. It would be handy to know a few plumbers and you will be asked to make good after they have finished.

Whatever you do, neatness and attention to detail is critical as your work will rely on recommends. Any flaws such as incorrect mitres, uneven paint lines against glass, paint on edges of electrical sockets will count against you.

I have a mate who is painter and decorator and he always says that the foundation of a good job is the preparation, wood treatment and quality materials, which is every bit as important as the finish.
