took rad off today to skim wall,, but when i re-hung the rad, i found that the part of the valve which screws in to the rad moved when i tightened the valve nut up,, so if i hold the valve in place with stilsons and tightening the nut, how do i stop the tread connecting to the rad turning thanks men

also can leaking lock shield valves be fixed or recondition.. thanks

Not worth fixing a lock shield. Just buy a new one

Usually the tail will not move if correctly installed in rad

Can you be any more clear about what you were trying to do when the tread was moving?

I would take moving tail out of rad and re tape thread and refit

If lock shield leaking from spindle and nut as spindle goes through to valve body, nut can be tightened or you can re move nut and re pack with ptfe tape inside,if no gland packing nut as on a lot of cheap valves as said, fit new

i was tightening the nut up on the rad valve and as i turn the nut, the tail is turning as well,, i suppose i could just fit a spanner on the tail and jam something behind the spanner to stop it moving,, also next time i take a rad of ill tighten up the tail before i re hang em.. or change the ptfe if need be.. plus i closed the lock shield fully,, but the water was still passing through,, i fitted a blank untill i put the rad back on,, so i was just curious if the valve could be fixed.

It's comman for a heating valve to pass. The rubbers get coated in magnetite and can't work effectively

Just replace it

Redo the tape on the tail.
The lock shields, or wheel head valves - sometimes identical valves, can be fixed if they are decent type, no matter age. Terrier are sorted with even just a tighten of packing nut. Cheap types, just renew ASAP.
You will get exceptions like the Peglers Belmont valves, with replaceable O rings.
