Removing TRV's from double rads

Hi,

I recently replaced my boiler (combi) and all my rads.

All the rads were fitted with a TRV except the heated towel rail in the bathroom.

When I turned the heating on all the rads were heating up to very hot quite quickly, apart from the two doubles which only heated to warm and then turned themselves off. (Making the living room very cold).

I've tried turning the TRV's down to 1 or 2 in the other rooms, this made no difference, I moved the thermostat to the hallway (coldest part of the house).

I've just unscrewed the TRV's off the two doubles and they are red hot and staying hot! Is it safe to leave them off? Will I need to replace them with normal valves? If so, can I do this without draining the whole system?

You can leave them off no problem

Sounds like you might have two dodgy trv heads tho

I thought they could be faulty but it seems odd it's the two on the double rads, and they were brand new a few weeks ago.

The most likely cause at this stage is a balancing issue. Here is a good guide you can follow if you have a decent thermometer. If you don't want to do it yourself any decent plumber should be able to do it for you in a couple of hours, depending on the size of the system of course.

As a temporary measure it's fine/safe to remove the heads to keep the room warm until you can get it sorted. There could other causes but I'd look at balancing first as it doesn't require draining down and should be done properly anyway to get the best out of the system.

Wouldn't say balancing issue as the op has turned all the other rads down to 1 / off

Do you mean you fitted the boiler etc yourself or you had a company do it? If the later then call them back.

Swap with TRVs off other rads to confirm that problem is trv heads.

Some trvs need fitting on the horizontal when fitted to double rads. Are yours?
