A couple of guys in my work have left to get jobs elsewhere. The boss has stated they must repay the cost of their ACS training. In our contracts there is nothing mentioning training costs to be paid when leaving the company.

Just wanted to get views on this from employees and employers.

Can he do this, he is talking about taking them to court for the money.

One guy sat his ACS earlier this year, the other two or three years ago.

If they've signed nothing stating that they will have to pay it back then they will be fine.

In the contract it may well be termed 'return of service'. meaning having to work x amount of years for the company to repay training costs

I started a thread back in 2012 called 'Gas training agreement!'. Not sure how to put a link in to this? If you search for this it should give you all the answers you need.

I had a similar thing with MFI.
Got offered a job on home electrical side.
I said id take it if they trained me for gas.
They said yes but id have to stay at least 4 or 5 year or pay costs back.

I ended up not taking it for another reason and just as well as they went bust a year or 2 later

Most companys will tie you in average I've seen is 3 years then you are free to leave. However there is also what you came to that employer with. If you came with 3 years worth of ticket and at the point of leaving have 3 or less there is not a thing they can do. Well that's what happened with me a few years ago anyway

got to see how it is for an employer, bit rich if you bugger off having been given loads of courses, same in the services once they spent £1,000,000 training you in how to fire missiles and fight ships etc, they want you to hang around for 5 or 6 years at least.
