Replacing lid on 2 button cistern - whole mechanism screws out

Had to take the lid off to replace the inlet diaphram, but now can't replace the lid without also messing up the two button mechanism.

This is not a 'normal' two button cistern, where the buttons can be removed individually, with this one (make unknown) the whole dual button bit unscrews so you can get the lid off. I can't find any Youtube videos, etc that feature this type of mechanism.

The problem with this design is that the double button screw sleve engages with another threaded sleve underneath, which holds the two arms of the mechanism - but as you screw the double button bit down, it unscrews the one below! (I can't understand why this is, or what purpose it serves!).

If the threaded sleeve below isn't screwed as far up as it will go, the end result is that, by the time you've screwed the double button bit in so that it's firmly in the cistern lid, the lower sleve has completely unscrewed and dropped into the water! But if you do screw it right up, although it doesn't drop out, the two-button mechnism doesn't work properly - it either doesn't flush at all, or the short-flush button just does a full flush.

I have tried trying to find a 'sweet spot' where the lower sleve isn't fully screwed in, but still doesn't drop out and the dual flush still works, but so far I haven't managed this. And, anyway, I can't believe that something could be deliberately designed to be this bloody difficult to fit!

I'm obviously doing something wrong, but what? After two weeks of trying, I am none the wiser. Can anyone help?

Anyway, here are some photos:

Not sure how to add descriptions to photos - the two-button mechanism unscrews as a complete unit (cannot be disassembled further), one button pushes down the outer tube, the other button operates a rod inside it. When the mechanism is screwed back in, it engages with a slot in the lower threaded sleeve, which then unscrews as the mechanism is screwed in, leading to it eventually dropping down into the tank.

Unfortunately the manual doesn't really tell me much more than I know just from trying to fit it! Although it's a relief to know my understanding of how it works (should work!) is correct. But when I assemeble it as instructed, it still doesn't work properly.

I'll have another go tomorrow (too late tonight), and see if I can get it to work. Thanks again.

Unless something is broken? Can you attach without the lid? Maybe try that a couple of times to help understand where it maybe failing?

It works fine like that, in fact that's how we've been using it for weeks! But put the lid on and screw the buttons back in and it doesn't work properly. I can only assume that I'm screwing it down further when the lid is on, but it's very hard to measure the difference the lid makes. I suspect there's only a small difference between working and not working, so maybe I just have to faff about until I get it right?

Have you knocked any of the settings/sliders?

You might be over tightening the push button to the lid
