I am replacing my failed shower pump with a similar model. Having closed all the gate valves, there is still water in the existing pump and it continues to flow form the hot water tank. The main hot water feed is from the top site of the tank through an Essex flange. Do I have to drain off a certain amount of water before I can replace pump ?

ypu do not say were gate valve are you closed, however if gate valve on cold feed to cylinder, you will have to drain cylinder down to Essex flange level, via cylinder drain, which is why isolation valve should have been fitted on outlet pipework from flange, this you should do now at same time as replacing pump for future use

Naaa, probably gate valves passing water.

No need to drain. Try the old tatie and carrot trick (under the hints and tips thread)
