Dan the plumber

Hey all,

Bit of advice needed please.

Was called out to a job yesterday where the customer was reporting bad smells coming back up into the upstairs bathroom.
The customer had his house refurbed the back end of last year and the plumber had created/installed a new bathroom downstairs and moved locations upstairs, hence re-ran the soil stack internally.

Basically, the plumber never installed an air admittance valve during installation hence is now causing syphonage from the shower trap every time the toilet is flushed.
Simple solution would be to install an air admittance valve right? Problem is, the "plumber" never calculated where both up & down stairs suits would be fitted before cementing in the soil stack, hence has had to use flexi pan connectors for the toilets.

Any suggestions regarding installing an air admittance valve that incorporates the flexi pan connector!? Space is very limited on either side of the wc upstairs & customer has the hidden waste style toilet but have advised may need to change this for another style!

Thanks all & hope this makes sense-lol

Could you put one on the basin? Or if the trap is accessible on the shower... An antivac shower trap?

First thought was an antivac shower trap, until I saw the bathroom that is.....newly laid floor & wall tiles and no way of getting to the trap unless I start removing these!

I guess I could possibly put one on the basin but am sure there was a fancy chrome trap installed!
Do you think this would be as effective as it would be installed directly on soil stack!? excuse my ignorance but any ideas where I could get a trap with an air admittance valve inbuilt as pretty sure I have ever seen something like this!?

Cheers for the help simon.

I think I've seen one in a catalog before. I'll post if I find one

Is it a straight pan connector or a 90* one ?

90* at the mo but the toilet is literally against the wall side on as the original plumber fixed the stack to far over!

The customer has requested that the pan is centralised so he doesnt have to sit on the pan sideways... not to much of a problem but will mean swapping the 90 to a flexi!

Do you reckon fitting an HEPvO trap to the basin will sort the above problem!? It acts like an AAV doesn't it!?

Thanks all

Not really possible due to the position the stack has been fixed into the floor. Also customer has one of the concealed waste pans that's virtually flush to the wall at the back of the pan!?

Sorry Dan, only just thought that one through. I guess your only option is to add the vent to the basin. If that doesn't work then you'll be looking at a lot of work.
