I would need your help for a second as I would like to report a job I have seen today.

Is there any email address to HSE as I would like to attach my picture.

See below

Kind regards,

Ron

Good training subject

What makes it unsafe and why

Also what's reportable about it (eg riddor)

Nowt wrong with an open fireplace. :D
I don’t think it’s very safe when it back ups into the living room neither proper installed. For me it’s shocking and putting his family at risk.

Do you think it’s correct when fumes backing up into the room?
Is that not shocking for you ?
I always was under the impression you take th8ngs very serious :)
If I am wrong that’s ok but have reported it just to be on the safe side.

What about spillage everywhere ?

It hasn’t got any hearth which is non combustible, what about flue ? Haven’t seen any flue liner either and I was sure you will require a flue liner. What about the safety surrounding what happens when the coal is coming out onto wooden floor?

You don't need a liner as long as the chimney is sound.

Looks like a work in progress.
that’s actually true. But how do I know it’s sound? If he uses a fire like this I wouldn’t trust his words. However, for me it ain’t right based on spillage etc

That’s not correct. If they run such a company they should undertake some actions. However, I wanted to back up myself and that’s what I did.

Thanks a lot to all of you for your input

they can only do something if a company has done something

if the customer has done it themselves they dont care

That looks like its been there for years, has it just been installed ?

I can’t tell you that. I assume it’s like this for some time. However, it’s not safe to use and that’s for me the priority.

Its my understanding that HSE like to collect information and build up a file on the offending person Don't think much gets done for a one off reports, unless something serious has happened , Explosion etc.

Yes, and they will ask if your competent to judge Solid fuel installations, i.e. are you qualified ?

There can’t be decent chimney draw on that fire with the wide and unclosed opening. Fumes at times must be terrible in that room.
The hearth base seems to be concrete, so probably as safe as if a proper hearth was in place.
Definitely a laid back homeowner there!

I am not. And I do not need to be qualified to tell that this is a dangerous install / or whatever you call it. You can see it has spillage marks all over the place. Even if they asked I’d be very frank that i am not holding license but still able to judge.

wrong

how do you know its spilling fyi coal is a dirty fuel

But how do you know that it is not safe Ron?
Spillage would be my first point. If you’d entered the property you would have smelled wrong burning or something like backing up into the room. It was very intense smell of wrong burned fuel. However, even though I am a bit more sensitive than others but never seen something like this before.

:D thats the first time ive know anyone be able to smell spillage

my suggestion to you leave it alone dont do anything
