Risk Assessment for General Plumbing Works

Hi Guys
You've probably been asked for this 100s of times before but is there a generic risk assessment or sample/template which I could use to create on of these please....I know you can order from specialist companies but thought I would try here first.

If I was asked for a risk assessment or health and safety stuff, guidelines, etc I'd walk away as I'd never be able to make up the money for lost time in writing up these stupid reports.

They either accept I'm a plumber and am aware of most H&S issues without me having to type up lengthy reports or they can hang themselves (but not by a piece of string as it might cut their neck.)

I felt like that when i was asked ,whats a cscs card for????
I had a firm ask me to design heating system plus do a drawing with professional indemnity insurance for the drawing ,just laughed at them and said o.k and put a price in for About 30 grand on 2 grands worth of work .

risk assessments ???? are you a company with more than 5 employees ?? or has some jobsworth asked you to show you one working in his house

Sorry but as far as I'm concerned a risk assessment to me is common sense. If I do it wrong it'll hurt, therefore I do it right.

Risk assessments are easy to write up. They may take a few hours but once done they are pretty much the same for all jobs.
method statement are easy too, just a list of what your doing and how you doing it sfae. if your self employed or employ people it would be wise to write some up on computer and just update them everytime your asked for them
ive even considered doing this as a part time job

Do you need to do a risk assessment legally if you have less than 5 employees? If you don't and someone asks you for one do you then have to do one anyway?

I was under the impression all the health and safety bs only applies to companies with more than 5 employees, we all do risk assessments when we walk into a job, just don't have it written on paper

Funnily enough just posted some links for the gas risk assessments and method statements at Goto Gas Docs but if you know where to get a set of plumbing ones that would be handy?

As far as I know you need all the docs if you have over 5 employees but you'd still have to answer to the authorities (HSE) if an employee gets a serious injury with no guidance / documentation from yourself/me.

It might just be paper but I saw a company torn apart by the HSE when a guy fell off a ladder with no proof of training or risk assessments.

You still need them just the same if you employ under 5 or even if you just employ yourself.
Over 5 you need a written Health and Safety Policy but it is wise to have one anyway.
Its like everything else. You may think you don't need them until you really wish you had them.

Is risk assessment a legal requirement?

Yes if you are an employer or self employed. It is a legal requirement for every employer and self-employed person to make an assessment of the health and safety risks arising out of his work. The purpose of the assessment is to identify what needs to be done to control health and safety risks. Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

You only need to record the assessment if you have 5 or more employees. See 'What do I need to record?' above.


Imagine, if you hold gas certs you need to conduct one for every task. I guess the fun starts if you have under five employees and one of them has an accident and you then need to prove you have done them but have no evidence.

Companys I have worked for in the past just get the guys to sign for a copy, an interesting area though judging by the amount of views, like everything else it's ok until it goes wrong.
