When I do a safety check, I do let by, tightness test, working press at metre, operating prees at boiler, burner press(if applicable) and heat input plus visual inspection. Servicing depends on type and manufacturer's requirements, when I do a service it always includes a safety check. When I am out doing safety checks/servicing customers ask me "whats that", u-guage," other fella didn't do that" or "he was only here 15min", or "he didn't give me a certificate". I mention this as every safety check i attend the previous plumb has not gone near the meter or on serving has only stuck a hoover in, in most cases no cert. This is hard for me as normally I come in average on most jobs but for safety checks and servicing I'm at the higher end, yet I'm doing the job properly. I haven't even mentioned that most boilers have gone years without a look(can be classified I.D) and that a frightening number where I'm now based were never installed legally/proffesionally. Had to say it, ta

this is an honest one
sub contractor from bg servicing back boiler for a friend
turns up doesnt ask where meter is and so no tightness test
proceeds to turn of gas fire(fire was off so he was turning gas on)
proceeds to crack open the joint
yeeha we have a flamer his professional advice to householder
RUN
whereby they run to garage
fire is a write off
when i asked friend he says noone has ever asked where the meter was or done any test before and after the service
this is not a handed down story this is true facts from a couple of weeks ago from the person himself

some more of the same
some 12 years ago there was a plumber servicing around 10 boilers/homes by lunch time for the local council .his tools ...a brush some spanners and some bits.all in a small kids like bag.
in the the afternoon he did his own work

it still the same these days..........

bg by virtue of its size must have more chancers than anyone else

I have lost count of badly serviced fires and boilers I have seen. I also got into trouble over the time I was taking to do a service. But to do it right does take time.

Its why I think CORGI where mad and GaSafe may improve matters by going and looking themselves.

But lets be honest, it comes down to price. The companies put pressure on for so many a day, which can be very difficult to reach if not impossible. That is why the certification should really be given to the gas fitter not the company. The problem is the companies are afraid the service engineers would hold them to ransom.

There must be a better way?
