Hi guys, im a qualified plumber with gas. However 100% of my experience has been on the installation side and i have no problem with plumbing HOWEVER, service and repair i basically have no clue! All the plumbers ive worked with including 30+ time served gas engineers dont either! The only advice ive had is 'follow the problem solving' from the back of boiler manual. Is it true majority of the time you pick up faults by reading the electrical resistance from some electrical components. Btw, ive only had my gas for a year since being a apprentice for 5 years! Would appriciate all advice.

I find identifying at which point of the firing sequence the fault has occurred is a good start, usually points you in the right direction. But you can never really diagnose the problem for sure without a multimeter and the skills to use it else you end up changing part after part, fingers crossed it'll work this time.......... Arrrgh!Basic electrical skills course is defo worth doing. Helped me alot.

Go to a trade show, meet the reps, they often can offer their training courses free of charge if you show enough interest, don't just do the upto date boilers, do some of the older boiler courses.
Repair/fault finding is a continual course of learning & experience. intermittant problems will test you & even the manufactures helplines.
Put as many manu' technical phone numbers in your mobile, you'll need them.

I had the same problem worked on installs all the time. Now out on my own have to cover everything, went on the mr combi course this was helpful. Basically its all electrical don't worry about going around a custards house and then ringing technical everyone does this every now and again. Get a little hand held tablet fill it up with boiler manuals and bring it to the jobs you'll be fine.

Thankyou very much for all your responses! (dnt know about the chaulky sweet line tho lol) im definately going to have to chase this up because up north theres just jobs everywhere wanting servicing and repair work! Cheers guys 

Don't tell the Southerners theres work up North,or they'll all be on the next train!SHHHHHH!
i hear a stampead of bankers (yes i said bankers) on their way via the ccc course centers looking for the £100k, stearing clear of rbs on the way as a habit.lol.

Remember, the average wage 'up here' is £2.50 a week.A loaf of bread is 6p in old money!Slavery was abollished last thursday. And we found this big, shiny thing in the sky yesterday we're thinking of calling the Moon.

Or at least you would do if you weren't too busy mining for coal.
we used to have coal in wales, then town gas came along made from coal, then NG then baxi bermudas, then ferrolis ,them mass recycling of ferrolis coz they where crap, then ideals that lasted 1 year and got recycled, then worcesters that sufferd mass incontinance coz they are plastic and broke with there durable o rings, then baxi duotecs, which did not work because gas had run out so the latest boiler on the market???? the parkray multi log burner pollution greenstar coal solarpanel HE
