Should I turn the Boiler off when draining system.

I want to change the taps on the rads in my living room. I know i will need to drain the system to do this, but i am not sure if i have to turn the boiler off as i still want to have hot water for general use. If i leave the central heating switched off on the controller in the airing cupboard can i leave the boiler running. Its an open vented system. Many thanks for any help.

Turn the boiler off, presuming if you have an airing cupboard and two tanks in the loft by draining the system down you won't have any hot water anyway.

Having said that you can still you the immerison heater if fitted and you'll have stored ho****er.

To be clear: your boiler will not heat the hot water because it is linked with the small tank in the loft which you will drain out. Turn the boiler off for safety.

If you make sure you have a cylinder of hot water before you start, you should be ok till the job is done (Assuming you don't have a disaster!) Make sure the boiler is turned off at the spur to avoid someone turning it on without you knowing. Best bet for this job is to use rubber bungs in the htg header tank outlet and vent, that way you only lose a cupful of water from each rad (only do one side at a time and don't open the rad bleed screw)
