Discuss Shower Unit in the Showers and Wetrooms Advice area at Plumbers Forums

I had a bath taken out about 18 months ago and a shower unit installed. I have recently noticed there are pinky coloured tinges on the white tile grouting and in the corners of the shower unit and pinky tinges appearing on the shower controls. Although the water appears to come out of the shower head clear there must be some underlying problem which is making the pinky colour - anybody any idea please?

Thanks

Pink mould - rotting soap and body fats to be blunt

Do you have an extract fan in the bathroom? If not that's your problem.

Go to your local supermarket and pick up a bottle of Domestos Grot Buster and a scrubbing brush.

Bit of elbow grease required.

Whenever you routinely clean your bathroom, use a scrubbing brush as well as a cloth.

Thanks for your reply - but it definitely is not mould - my feeling is that being in such a hard water area as London the pipes are furred up with limescale and whatever else the pipes are lined with and this is causing a reaction on the grouting and parts of the shower unit causing it to take on a pinky glow - it certainly is not mould and the unit is kept immaculate - I just wonder if anyone else in London has this problem - it has got to be something to do with the pipes through which the water is flowing.

Thanks once again and I wold be grateful for any more information please.

Mold and mildew can be identified by it's color, either shades of pink, brown or black, that covers the surface. A large amount of mold or mildew will leave an area with a musty or sour odor. Mold in bathrooms can take on a variety of colors -- blue, pink and green!!
Mold and bacteria feed on the nutrients in the water or deposits on the fixtures, such as skin scales, dirt and soap scum.

Do you scour or scrub the grout on a regular basis? If not, a quick wipe over is not enough to remove the scum which it feeds on.

Will it come off with bleach and a quick scrub? If so then it is mould.

Limescale deposits do exacerbate the problem as the mould has more area on which to grow.

If you have a lot of iron pipework in your area you may get orange rust which can permanently stain grout and porcelain.
