Got asked today to give a price on a small job. Fit an on suite . Ok . He said not a big job shouldn't cost much.wanted on suite in bedroom ,I said what's there now. He said nothing ,just a bedroom. You only have to build a box and put a bathroom in he said. Then , it'll need a window , a beday, bath , shower. There's no soil pipe that side of house. He said no more than £400. I laughed .he was serious . Too busy I said good luck.

Haha, what a tit. I'd have probably driven over there just to laugh in his face.

Someone will take his money and might even stay until the money runs out (which won't be long) then we have the makings of another episode for Rogue Traders.

In reality we should have the makings of an episode for one of the following programs:

Home owners with unrealistic expectations.

Consumers who waste tradesmen's time.

Nightmare customers in the making.

Any more potential titles for the new TV show?

Nobs like that know how much it really costs and are chancing their luck. Unfortunately an even bigger nob will take the job on at that price, that's what is driving prices down.

Do they really think they will get a tradesman for that price?
You would struggle to get the stud work and door up and tacked properly for that.
First fix water/heating
Drainage
Electrics
Tiling
Second fix
Shower screen
All including VAT - £400 - unbelievable!

He will get someone to do it. It will look awful, not comply with any regs and leak somewhere without a doubt.

The weird thing is, he'll probably think he got a good deal.

FML.

Yes, someone out there will do it. I'm constantly amazed at what some muppets are prepared to work for. Recently quoted a bathroom at four and a half grand and custard went with a quote for £850. Good luck to her, she'll need it when it all starts leaking.
Others are taking on work at cost price just to do work as they have nothing else on, and don't get me started on Polish immigrants doing work for peanuts. A custard recently got her whole living room plastered for £35, snots and all, when a decent company quoted £250.
These miserable penny pinching custards can go and take a hike, I'm not interested in working for pennies.

I agree, indeed when I am quoting and a customer starts telling me what needs to be done, and questions everything I say (a classic is - "the last guy did not say we needed Aquapanel" ), I get a sinking feeling and begin to loose interest.

I have been asked to give my professional opinion on their project and my view is that this is what they will get, together with a price to do it properly.

If the customer is not happy, that is fine, after all that is the market in operation.

It is easy to take this view having been doing this for many years, but in the early days I used to be tempted to quote on price and every time it was me and not the customer who was out of pocket at the end.

My view now is, here is my price to do it properly, end of.

It's not just if it leaks its the finish you should get with a well fitted suite and good tiling.
If fitted to the quote you gave system3 the bathroom will last until out of fashion.
With the price they go for it will last until water gets behind the tiles!

Now I like a bargain, but you wouldn't even be able to buy the bits for £400. I suppose he wanted it tiled as well! What a donut.

Unfortunately with the economy being what it is some guys are leaping at these opportunities without too much thought.
