Smart metering experience

hi all I'm after getting into smart metering.i have a level 2 NVQ in plumbing and a level 3 in gas. im also gas safe and have my met 1,boilers,pipework ect. I've applied for jobs but they all want 1 years experience. im prepared to work for free to gain this experience.any help would be greatly appreciated thanks Matt.

I have no experience in smart meter.but I've been a plumber for over 10 years.

There can't be many small firms who are fitting smart meters yet as the utilities haven't really embraced volume installations yet, have you tried the utility companies or their contractors to offer working for free? To be honest I think you will struggle as they will probably train up their existing experienced workforce on the electrical part of the gas smart meter install first

Most of the utility companies are either recruiting or about to recruit smart meter engineers - have you tried applying direct? They'll all want you to be dual fuel but will train u if necessary.

Why would you want to downgrade to a mindblowingly boring job?

Yes I'm employed by Rochdale council. I've been fitting unvented cylinders this week but I've had enough and want the easy life with no stress. I'm only 34 but my knees are killing me haha and I'm sick to death off lifting and cutting floor boards.

What makes you think fitting meters won't hurt your knees?! What is it about Smart Metering that you really want to work on them?

I have to say prices for meter fitting us ok if you get access as it's contract work you only get Odis for what you fit, I can make good money fitting gas because it's second nature and it's all autopilot, as it is with any job, but if I was doing smart meters or dual fuel I wouldn't make any money on the electric ones as I would be taking too long

You soon get use to the elec, however most companies employ you on salary now and not price work.
